Case study: 100ZR and OpenZR+ directly from the router for 1000 km

30/6/2025

The cooperation of Salumanus and Hawe Telekom resulted in the completion of tests of coherent modules of the Polish brand GBC Photonics with capacities of 100G i400g. The tests were aimed at verifying the performance of optical DWDM inserts in demanding conditions of long distance IP/MPLS transmissions on domestic and international sections.

During tests in real network conditions, the route Poznań—Frankfurt with a length of nearly 1000 km was checked. The QSFP-DD 400G coherent modules operating in 8QAM modulation mode enabled stable transmission at 300G speed. This confirms that these types of modules, installed directly in switches or routers, allow to connect remote network nodes in an economical way.

The cost-effectiveness of such connections is due not only to investment savings — i.e. the absence of the need to purchase additional equipment such as transponders or muxponders — but above all to significant operational benefits. The GBC Photonics Coherent Module mounted directly into a switch or router takes up less space in the server rack, consumes up to ten times less electricity than conventional transponder-based solutions, and simplifies infrastructure management by reducing the number of devices. At the scale of the entire network, this translates into a reduction of operating costs by up to 80%.

The test results are very promising — 100G and 300G transmissions matched flawlessly, and trials with 400G showed that there is little missing for full functionality on international routes. Modules tunable directly from the router eliminate the need for external programming and speed up the deployment process.

Salumanus announced the continuation of work on new versions of 400G inserts with 8QAM modulation, which are intended to allow stable links to be assembled even in more difficult transmission conditions.

- When developing the GBC Photonics line, we care not only about the quality of the module itself, but also about its usefulness in real operator implementations. Hawe Telekom is a partner for us who uses our solutions exactly where it matters most — at the core of the network — emphasizes Marcin Bała.

Testing at Hawe Telekom is another step in the development of domestic optical technology, which can confidently compete with the products of the world's largest manufacturers. GBC Photonics modules are designed and configured in Poland, and their flexibility and interoperability meet the needs of modern network operators building scalable, high-bandwidth next-generation networks.
