Salumanus network laboratory at the Cracow University of Technology
On November 14, 2018 at the Cracow University of Technology, in the presence of the university authorities and representatives of our company, the activity of a new network laboratory for students was officially inaugurated.
The donated DCN equipment will allow students to learn about modern data transfer technologies in practice.
Our company, as part of the first tranche of support, provided the students of the University of Technology with equipment worth PLN 35 thousand. The new lab stations at PK include ten modern DCN L3 Enterprise class network switches with cabling. These types of devices are used in professional installations that create network infrastructure, both copper and fiber. The equipment provided thus allows for universal training of students in the use of commands in CLI syntax in the so-called industrial standard (regardless of the specifics of the products of a given manufacturer).
As he pointed out on Wednesday during the official handover of the equipment Chairman of Salumanus Krzysztof Podgórski Communication technologies are becoming an integral part of the next areas of life. “In the era of the Internet of Things (IoT), the progressive robotization and automation of not only industry, but also many aspects of our daily lives, a good understanding of the operation of Ethernet networks is, in my opinion, a key element in the education of technical university students. I am very happy that by co-creating the laboratory we can support the Cracow University of Technology, which is one of the most important technical universities in Poland — emphasized Krzysztof Podgorski
The importance of cooperation, with such a partner as Salumanus, emphasized Rector of CP Prof. Jan Kazior: “There is no good education without the cooperation of universities with partners from the economic environment. Thanks to the support of Salumanus, our students will already learn about modern technologies and equipment during their studies, which they will use in their professional work. This practical experience will significantly increase their competence and strengthen their position on the labor market.
Faculty of Mechanical Engineering PK has been training specialists in the field of construction and management of computer networks for many years. — Thanks to the cooperation with Salumanus in our laboratory, students will learn not only the basics of computer networks, but also learn how to design a network so that it can counteract threats to a certain extent, and in the event of a failure it is ready to minimize its consequences — explains Paweł Brandys, PhD from the Institute of Applied Informatics of the Mechanical Faculty of the Cracow University of Technology.
The ability to design computer networks and manage them properly is a particularly important and sought-after competence by employers, especially in the era of the Internet of Things (IoT). “The times are coming when almost any device will communicate over the network — the refrigerator will send us an email with a shopping list, the alarm clock will wake us up 15 minutes earlier when it receives information that snow has fallen and traffic jams are predicted. Already today, most TVs with Smart function require connection to the network and themselves, without our interference, update the software. Installing a dishwasher or refrigerator will require an Internet connection. These new functionalities require new competencies from IT specialists, because they create new threats. Our graduates will be able to deal with them — announces Mariusz Krawczyk, M.Sc., a lecturer in the laboratory of PK and Salumanus.
The teaching laboratory is an element of wider cooperation between the company and the university. Thanks to the agreement signed in May 2018, the company already cooperates with the Polytechnic University in organizing internships and internships for students, the implementation of diploma theses and conducting certified trainings and courses for students with the participation of experts. As part of the next tranches of support, Salumanus will provide the university with another valuable equipment for the construction of fiber optic infrastructure.
