Alien wavelength - easily scale your network

Alien wavelength (alien lambda) is a technology with which you will increase the bandwidth of existing DWDM networks.

Even if the network was built with 10G channels in mind, with a high degree of probability you can run services on it 100G/200G. This solution allows you to plug directly into the DWDM multiplexer “foreign” devices for providing additional bandwidth or, for example, launching an encrypted service, and most importantly - alien wavelength eliminates the need for large investments in infrastructure, because we add more wavelengths if necessary.

The development of technologies such as 5G, IoT, 4K/8K content and progressive automation have created a high demand for bandwidth. This is a big challenge for service providers.

Motivating factors Companies for the application of alien wavelength technology can be different:

  • Optimising the use of spectrum due to the exhaustion of wavelengths in existing multiplexers,
  • the inability to run the required services on an existing hardware platform,
  • unexpected increase in volume services to key clients,
  • necessity Encryption transmission,
  • willingness to enter into the offer new services.

‍

In such a dynamic and demanding environment, service providers must be able to quick response for all bandwidth requests. The ideal would be a solution that allows you to add any capacity to any system at any time. But is that all?

To ensure competitiveness of services, account must be taken not only of the cost of purchase, but also of issues such as management or maintenance, so that operating costs remain at a sufficiently low level.

This solution can have several versions. However, the most important thing is that none of them requires changes or additional expenditures on the existing DWDM infrastructure. It can be:

  • type solution muxponder allowing aggregation of traffic with lower bandwidths to a single lambda with a throughput of 100G/200G. The greater the range of aggregate traffic, the more versatile this muxponder will be. The most popular services today are definitely 10/40/100GbE, 8/16/32G FC, OTU2/OTU3/OTU4.
  • type solution transponder allowing transfer over an existing 100GbE/OTU4 transmission network using lambd 100G/200G.
  • solution encrypting enabling the required transmission to be encrypted at the first layer and transported over the existing DWDM infrastructure.

One of the most important aspects that speak in favor of alien wavelength solutions is their economic rationale. It is very difficult to predict in which network nodes and how the demand for bandwidth will grow, at the same time we want to avoid large investments in infrastructure.

This is why compact devices seem ideal for this purpose, consuming a small amount of energy and easy to operate. Separating the role of network administrator (service provider) from the role of cryptography administrator (end user) also seems crucial for the provision of encryption services.

In conclusion, the alien wavelength solution allows you to simplify the DWDM network, improving its spectral performance. In addition, thanks to it, you can implement new services and secure sensitive data. And all this in order to Extend the life of your existing infrastructure.

Wondering how this solution can help your network? What additional services will you be able to run or what savings can you count on? Or maybe you ask yourself: is this solution for me at all?

Our mission is to select such solutions that will meet the requirements of the rapidly changing world of telecommunications, ensure efficient functioning and a high rate of return on investment. At Salumanus, we support our partners by helping them build good ICT networks.

Interoperability of 400ZR coherent modules: how it works in practice

For years, coherent optical transmission meant one thing: if you had a router from vendor X, you bought modules from vendor X. It was a closed ecosystem—no choice, total vendor lock-in. The 400ZR standard changed that, but not everything, and not all at once. Below, we explain what 400ZR interoperability means in practice, where its limits lie, and what you should check before assuming that two modules from different manufacturers will communicate with each other.

GPON czy XGS-PON? Jak zaplanować migrację bez przebudowy sieci

The question of migrating from GPON to XGS-PON comes up today in every other conversation with an access-network operator. Most often in a form that betrays a fear of the cost: does it mean replacing the entire infrastructure? The answer is no, provided you understand what happens in the optical layer and which network elements you really have to touch. This article focuses on exactly that layer. Not on OLT features or business models, but on what physically happens on the fibre, which elements you replace, and which you leave alone.
